Transitioning And Loving My Curly Natural Hair

There is nothing as exciting as when you find pleasure in the smallest events in life. Transitioning my hair has been a journey of discovery. A few weeks ago I decided to take better care of my hair, use products that will promote hair growth and length retention. Today, I am loving my fuller hair and curls.

I have been struggling with my hair (shedding/length retention) all my life and it was very frustrating because I have always wanted long hair and no matter what I did it just kept falling off.

My hair is thin and when relaxed with a creme relaxer or straightened with a hot iron it becomes weak. You might ask yourself why I didn’t stop using a relaxer, well the answer is simple. My afro in its’ original state was something I would never consider wearing. I just wouldn’t know what to do with it (no one ever taught me how to groom an afro or style it). In South Africa as soon as you can afford a relaxer you buy one (if your mom/aunt hasn’t relaxed your hair already). Afro’s are not as common as you might think in South Africa.
In the past 2 weeks I accompanied my friend to the salon she had just had the big chop (cut off all her relaxed) and went natural and wanted to do a straight back as a protective style in the winter season. The hairstylist had one glance at her hair and told her she had to relax it because it wasn’t long enough and would not ‘look nice’ in her straight back extentions (this is how uncommon afros are in South Africa).

When I decided to transition I told myself I will not go fully natural because I knew I could’nt resist the urge to reach for my trusted relaxer. I decided to use a very very mild relaxer (black silk) that would losen my afro so I can manage my hair better.

Little did I know that at the point when I thought my hair will have new growth so tough I would have no option but to relax it, it would be looking as gorgeous as it does now. I have gone approximately 12 weeks without a relaxer, in that time I have been following a healthy hair regime.
– Deep condition every week
– Use a combination of essential oils (I mixed myself) everyday (cocunut, olive oil, flexseed oil, almond oil, avocado oil and custor oil).
– Give my hair intense hair treatment once a week
– Use a water-based spray with essential oils (when wearing a protective style)
– Avoid using heat
– Do protective style as often as possible especially in winter
– Cover my hair at night
– Use a wide tooth comb (I comb my hair as little as I can, I try not to use a comb)
– Trimmed off the ends
It might seem like too much but it’s not. I have grown into the regime and I love how my hair is changing everyday.

I now have two textures, relaxed and curly (new growth). I love the virgin hair. Instead of my new growth being tough and unmanageable it is soft very very soft and it is forming a curl pattern and not the usual coiled up spring.
When I sleep I do a protective style and spray my hair with my water-based spray. In the morning I undo my twists and use butter based moisturiser on my scalp, I then rub my scalp with my finger tips. By the time I’m done my hair looks soft, hydrated and curly. I don’t use a comb I just use my finger tips to set my curls into a style for the day.

This new texture has me jumping for joy because I never thought that my hair could look this great. So, now I am staying away from a creme relaxer jar and following my healthy hair regime. If someone would have told me before I began this journey that my hair would develop such a beautiful curl pattern and look so full and healthy I would NOT HAVE BELIEVED’M. I attribute this discovery to all the wonderful dedicated bloggers out there who selflessly share their journey so people like me can make informed choices.

Old Habits Die Hard The Road To A Better You Begins Today, Summer Bodies Are Built In Winter

Being a conscious buyer has been the best thing I could have done for my skin and hair this winter. If you missed my last blog post on natural oils, I was doing research on the best products for my hair and skin. I purchased various essential oils to try and make a combination of oils that will work best for my hair and skin.

I am glad to say my hard work paid off (well it was more fun then hard), my skin looks A-MA-ZING! I have found the potion to better looking skin…and being a good blogger I will share my secrete to having great skin despite the harsh, dry winter wind.

Now, when it comes to using oils or with most D.I.Y remedies it’s usually a matter of trial and error. And forget not – what works for me might not work for you, we have different skin and hair types not to mention the environmental factors and our diets – so many things come into play. But the great thing about using natural oils is that you can never go wrong.
I have been using coconut oil, almond oil, olive oil and custor oil as a moisturiser for my body and hair. Here is how I mix my oils.

Ingredients:
1/4 Custor oil
1/2 Almond oil
1/2 Olive oil
1/2 Coconut oil (melted)

when I first used my moisturiser straight out of the shower I thought it might look oily, but to my surprise there was no oily look or feel. My skin is literally glowing since I started using the natural oils and it is clearer. The only other thing that I do differently apart from using the oil is I exfoliate my body once every week, when I apply the oil I use circular motion. I also use it on my hair to seal in the moisture after a wash and my hair just sucks it up there is no greasy residue left behind.

But, the all important rule of a healthier you is – great skin and body always starts from the inside out. Before I even decided to use essential oils I changed a few habits, I started jogging. When I don’t have time to jog I do exercises in the house (squats, lunges, plank etc.) just to get my heartbeat racing a bit. I make sure I drink a lot of water every-day!

So, as you can see I am trying to do things a little differently. I am not perfect. Sometimes if I give myself enough excuses I go a week without excersise, but I don’t give up. The following week I go right back, even more determined. Changing your lifestlye is one of the hardest things to do, because you have to unlearn habits you have become acustomed to for years.

In winter we change our eating habits we consume more coffee, eat more salty foods and hearty meals. We try to keep warm and as a result exercise less. This all contributes to the changes we see in our hair, skin and body. So the winter challenge for me was to be more active during the winter season. I believe my choice to be pro active made a huge difference not only for my health but my hair and skin too. Using the essential oils has been a rewarding choice for me. Now, if only changing my diet can be as easy…

When Only The Best Will Do For Your Hair, Face And Body It’s Pure Essential Oils or Nothing – D.I.Y

This week I have been on a mission to begin my metamorphosis into more healthier hair, face and body products. I have read a lot of blogs and watched a lot of you tube video’s all of which is very helpful – but confusing at the same time. So, this whole week I dedicated my time to buying some really great oils with the intention to make my own hair, face and body products. I managed to get pure coconut oil, almond oil, linseed/flaxseed oil and castor oil (from my local pharmacy), olive oil, avocado oil, amla oil (from my local food store) and Olive Miracle growth oil (with a mix of essential oils) and a few great hair products (from my local health and home product store). Although I got a few oils on my list, I failed to get all the oils I needed and it proved to be quite a mission getting through my list. I realised this, my blogs are by Americans and it seems that they have a vast array of products available to them in their local stores and in large quantities at reasonable prices. Here in South Africa these very same products although some of which can be easily found, they cannot be located in one store nor can they be found in large quantities or variety – you will get the oils in small packaging at a high cost. And worst of all the staff can be of little help because they are unfamiliar with these oils or their use, they will not even know if the store stocks them or not. Keep in mind you will find these oils on different isles of the store, like the avocado oil will be on the food isle while the coconut oil will be on the cosmetic isle. One essential ingredient I was disappointed not to find is aloe vera, I did find one in powder form called Cape Aloe. But, since I was looking for the aloe in liquid form I just didn’t know how to incorporate the Cape Aloe into my other oils. Now I have all these oils lined up on my bedroom dresser along with all my other hair products – my dresser looks a mess. I have my beauty products, a lot of hair and body products and hair dyes (I rarely use). I just love a good sale I guess, because I get most of my products on sale. The reason I went on this ridiculous oil shopping spree is because I have a plan. I intend to use pure products from now on. While reading through all those blogs one simple fact became very apparent to me. We always want to but products that are going to aid our health and looks, this is the very trick product marketers use on us unsuspecting consumers. They sell us products and write in bold print coconut oil, almond oil or olive oil and even make the bottle look greenish like the olive and emphasise all the goodness of these oils to us on the cover/label – and we think yes! That’s exactly what I need AWESOME!!!. But hold on…turn that product around and look for the olive oil, almond oil or coconut oil on the ingredients list. You will run your eyes down the list until viaola there you go, you find it at number 11 or worse it’s the 27th on the list – WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? Well, it simply means you’ve been had. What you are buying is not olive oil but has trace elements of the oil in it. As a rule always look to see if the main ingredient is in the first 5 ingredients on the list because that is what makes up the bulk of your product. I now practice this rule every time I go shopping and I am usually disheartened to find that most products use false advertisement. Adding a few of these essential/carrier oils together with pure shearbutter (which I am still searching for) or on their own will give me varying consistencies and mixtures of oils that will serve differing purposes for my hair, face and body. I like following beauty regimes that work for me and trying some on recommendation. I enjoy my oil baths and or straight out of bath oil moisturizer, oil face cleansing, hot oil treatments, pre poos, essential oil shearbutter, creme hair treatments and adding carrier and essential oils to my hair conditioners or water based hair spray. As you can see there are so many uses for these essential and carrier oil. I have already made a mixture I use on my hair, body and for my soothing oil bath. FYI Adding rosemary does wonders for the scent. I simply want to give my hair, face and body the best that it needs. I am on the look out on how to effectively use these oils to serve me accordingly and therefore I welcome any and all suggestions.
